Like many others, the Eiger had me snared since reading Heinrich Harrer's "The White Spider" over 30 years ago as I camped, walked and climbed through the Alps.

My interest was recently rekindled when it was the subject of Joe Simpson's award winning film, "The Beckoning Silence", as well as highlighted in the superb IMax movie "The Alps".

The Eiger really is a fascinating mountain; a tangled history of successful ascents coupled with notorious climbing disasters. In the case of the Eiger, what made the drama so compelling was its enactment within sight of the hoards of tourists viewing the "spectacle" from the comfort of the nearby mountain resort of Kleine Sheidegg.

The Eiger Nordwand

Ironically, many were on thier way to the Jungfraujoch via the mountain railway that bores through the very mountain climbers were struggling to conquer.

At a scale of 1:2000 it's been a fascinating project piecing together the defining landmarks up the face; First Pillar, Hinterstoisser Traverse, Death Bivouac, Ramp and of course The Spider itself. Some features, such as the icefields, have gradually disappeared due to the effects of climate change.

The finished model stands a metre high, one metre wide but, because of the steepness of the face, only 0.5 m deep! The emphasis has been on realism, highighting the scale of the wall and the main features on the face as they were back in the 30s, before global warming!
